Mongar (1700 m) is the district headquarters of the same name and is nothing more than a resting point between Bumthang and Trashigang. A visitor guest house provides simple facilities, decent views of a wide area and a lovely garden. Monger is perhaps the first mountain town to be built on a hillside instead of a plain. The highest urban center in the mountains, after Thimphu, is Trashigang (1.150 m). The most populated area of Bhutan’s administrative and economic center, Trashigang is renowned for its woodwork and weaving. Trashigang also has an amazing dzong which takes its name from the area. Founded on a spur between 1656 and 1659, overlooking the river Gamri, 400 m below, the name aptly translates as “fortress of the auspicious mountain”.
