The Trongsa Lhuntse Tshechu is a festival honoring Guru Padmasambhava, “one who was raised from a lotus flower.” Around 800 AD, this Indian saint contributed immensely to the propagation of Tantric Buddhism in the Himalayan regions of Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan etc. He is the founder of the Nyingmapa, the Lamaism “traditional generation” that still has many adherents. Guru’s history is illustrated by 12 episodes of life style Buddha Shakyamuni. Every episode is commemorated by “the Tschechu” on the tenth day of the month throughout the year.
The dates and duration of the festivals varies from district to district but according to the Bhutanese calendar they usually take place on or before the 10th day of the month. During Tshechus both monks and laymen conduct the dances. The Tshechu is a religious festival, which is claimed to achieve rewards from observing it. It’s always an international social event, where the participants come together to celebrate, adorned in all their finery.
