Overview

The semi-independent Tibetan Kingdom’s Upper Mustang trek into the rugged Trans-Himalayan region provides an exciting 19-day travel plan with magnificent trekking. It passes through the compelling semi-arid desert with vibrant rocky outcrops, lush valleys, and snow-capped mountains circling you. Culture, history, mythology, and legend are all mixed with the breathtaking scenery.

The Upper Mustang trek takes you to the Kingdom of Mustang, also known as Lo, a hidden Buddhist land. The early history of Lo is cloaked in folklore, myth, and mystery, but there are papers of events dating back to the 8th century. With its vast stretches of yellow and grey wind-eroded rolling hills, Lo’s landscape is reminiscent of the Tibetan plateau.

The trail leads you across Kagbeni – the entrance to Upper Mustang and from there to Lo-Manthang, the palace of prior Rulers of the Kingdom of Lo, across a harsh terrain in the tropical region of the Dhaulagiri plateau. Learn about the local culture by exploring caves, rock paintings, monasteries, and gompas. And also an excursion to Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar, the King’s palace within Lo Manthang, and the last settlement to the northwest. It offers a more extensive cultural awareness of the region. The center of attention of this thrilling trip is breathtaking views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri peaks, and others. This Upper Mustang Trek 19 days via Yara/Ghara is slightly different from the other Upper Mustang Trek. In which we retrace backcrossing Yara/Ghara village and also explore the Muktinath temple.

You will be able to attend the Tiji festival in Lo Manthang if you visit in May. This three-day festival honors the tale of Dorje Jono, a god who must battle his demon father to save the Mustang kingdom from destruction.  Monks in masks perform prayers and ceremonial dances outside the settlement, as well as horse races.

You can take Upper Mustang Trek 19 via Dhakmar and Ghiling villages for some change in route. Or customize your trip as you wish, and need any help, let us know.

Highlights

    • Scenic mountain flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and Jomsom to Pokhara.

Day 6 Trek to Syangbochen (3,570 m, 6-7 Hrs).

Today’s trail leads west, up a hill with sheer and progressive parts next to quaint Gyagar Village.  The views of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Thorong Hill, Yakwa Kang, and other peaks become more spectacular as we climb higher. After a long day hike, we arrive at a pass marked by prayer flags and rock piles. Walking further, we reach Samar village, where we will have lunch and then resume our trek to Syangbochen.

Day 9 Trek to Lo Manthang (3,810 m, 4 Hrs).

Today we will spend some time at Tsarang exploring villages and their monastery before heading to Lo Manthang. Ascend steadily above the valley to a large isolated chorten that serves as the Tsarang-Lo boundary. The trail then widens, and you get your first glimpse of Lo Manthang’s walled settlement.  Since there is only one entrance to the city, you must circumambulate the wall to reach the gate on the northeast corner.

Overnight at a Guesthouse.

Day 10 Visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar.

After breakfast, you will go on a walking tour around the valley and will visit four big gompas: Jampa Lhakhang or Jampa Gompa, Thubchen Gompa, Chodey Gompa, and Choprang Gompa. After that, hike one hour from Lo Manthang to the village of Namgyal. Here is a monk’s school with a small museum. And, if you still have the energy and desire, you have a couple of options. You could start by climbing up to the nearby hill to see the old ruined castle. It just takes an hour, and the views are breathtaking. The walk down from the walled city to Lo Manthang is spectacular. A second choice is to travel north up the valley to see Tingkhar’s summer palace.

The day begins with a trek along ridges before descending steeply to the Kali Gandaki River and crossing a narrow ravine. Dhi, the village of stunning abandoned forts, is quickly approaching. We then make our way to the village of Yara.
