Makalu’s foothills and trekking path are snuggled in a previously prohibited protected area and are therefore unconditionally untouched and natural in the perfect way. Makalu Base Camp is a camping trek that will put us up close and personal with the unspoiled nature of Nepal’s most remote areas, as well as the cherished cultures of the most remote peoples.
We’ll travel across five separate geographical areas witnessing the variety of plants and animals along the way. The spectacular scenery of several of the Himalayas ‘ highest mountains, namely Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Baruntse, can be admired from a vantage point of the base camp.
The beautiful flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar airport kicks off the distant and exciting Makalu base camp trek. This journey brought us through the Arun River valley, past rustic Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa settlements like Seduwa and Num, and through Makalu Barun National Park with views of the hills and ravines.
Arun Valley, the world’s deepest valley, is the biggest attraction of the Makalu base camp trek. Arun Valley is well-known for its diverse native birds, with over 600 varieties, such as the imperiled spiny babbler, which can only be found in Nepal.
The path that leads to Makalu Base Camp across the tiny settlements and scenic landscape scenery such as Tashigaon, Khongma Danda, Dobate, Yangri Kharka, and Langmale Kharka before arriving at Makalu Base Camp and walking back to Tumlingtar for your return journey.

Once you reach Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the Himalayan Marvel Adventure delegate will receive you from there and then check-in in at the hotel.
On this day, after breakfast at the hotel, we will meet the guide and crew members, a small meeting regarding our trek details. In the meeting, we will be discussing our itineraries, accommodation, transportation, and services that we include and exclude, and we provide a cap, T-shirt, and bag with our company logo.
Then our city guide will take you for Kathmandu sightseeing, which includes Basantapur Durbar, Hanuman Dhoka, the busiest market of Kathmandu- Asan Bazar, Pashupatinath, and many more.
From a domestic airport, fly to Tumlingtar and enjoy views of snow-capped peaks ranging from Ganesh Himal to Mt. Everest and Makalu. Once we reach Tumlingtar, we begin our thrilling bus or jeep journey to Chichira from Tumlingtar.
The trek begins after breakfast at Chichira Lodge. We walk uphill from Chichira via Kumal village to Khandbari village in the middle of the Sal subtropical forest.
Begin by descending steeply along the adjacent slopes of the Arun River. The paths in this small valley’s lower hills are heavily forested, and they can be treacherous. After reaching the bottom, we cross the Arun River on a suspension bridge. Then we make our way out of the rainforest and up a steep ascent to Seduwa. Seduwa is a charming village with a primary school and a small medical clinic.
We’ll walk from Seduwa to Tashigaon today, which might take about 4-5 hours. We’ll pass through the forest and villages along the way. Along the lane, the cardamom plants appear to be incredible and smell amazing.
In Seduwa, there is a checkpoint where we can pay the conservation entrance fee. The mountains that surround Tashigaon will take your breath away when you arrive.
We’ll leave after breakfast for our next destination. Since we must walk steeply at a higher altitude today, the trek is more arduous than the previous days. On our way to the stream and ridge, we’ll ascend through the trees. From here, the trail becomes more complicated. We’ll eventually climb to the top of the rim through a stair and lake after passing through the Kharka, where animals gaze. The Khongma La Danda is just a short distance away.
Look for signs of altitude sickness again in the morning. If someone in your team has had a restless night, make sure they stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. There isn’t anything to do here except explore the surrounding forest and take in the scenery, so relax and unwind, soak your feet, and drink as much water as you can.
We will trek through three passes today. The trek rises sharply from Khongma through rhododendron forests to Ghungru La, which offers spectacular views of Makalu, Chamlang, and Kanchenjunga in the west and east, respectively. We carry on to Shipton La, then descend to Kalo Pokhari Lake, passing a small pond along the way. We continue our trek by climbing to Keke La and then descend through a beautiful rhododendron forest to Dobate.
The trek from Dobate to Yangri Kharka typically takes 6-7 hours. The path is almost entirely free of bumps. We’ll take a stroll along the banks of the Barun River, passing through Rhododendron and pine forest. We’ll be able to take in the stunning scenery along the way.
Our trek starts with stunning scenery and a spectacular landscape after breakfast at the tea house. Since you’re already at a high altitude, even a short walk feels like an eternity. We’ll probably have lunch at Merek after walking through Yak Kharka, a high Himalayan pasture ground. We arrive at Langmale Kharka’s tea house after a few hours of walking.
Today is the main highlight of the trip, where we trek to Makalu Base Camp. We’ll trek up to Sherson and then to Makalu Base Camp from Langmale Kharka. On the way, there is an ice glacier. After Sherson begins, we can see a lot of snowcapped mountains. Similarly, throughout the day, an excellent view of Makalu can be seen. We’ll spend the next day relaxing at the tea house.
This is an acclimatization day, so you can spend the day relaxing at the camp or going for a short hike if you prefer. The most scenic walk will be on the right side of the camp for a closer look at Mt. Makalu, Barun Pokhari, and the view of Everest’s rare face, the Kanshung face with Lhotse. After an hour of a steep climb, you’ll reach a deep meadow from which you can hike higher to get a better view of the peaks. Return to the camp after enjoying that area.
On this day we retrace back on the same trail which we take earlier. Once we reach Yangri Kharka, we take a rest.
Leaving Yangri Kharka behind, we retrace back on the same route that we take earlier.
After morning breakfast at Dobate, we head towards Khongma Danda on the same trail which we take earlier to ascend.
Same as earlier retracing days, today also we take the same trail which we used to ascend earlier.
Retrace back on the same trail after breakfast, which we used to ascend earlier.
Leaving Seduwa after breakfast, we descend down to Num on the same trail crossing Arun river, which we used to ascend earlier.
On this last day of the trek to Tumlingtar, we leave Num after a delicious breakfast. We descend down to Tumlingtar passing Chichilla village.
Breakfast in the morning, say goodbye to the trekking crew, and fly back to Kathmandu with the trekking guide. After 50 mins flight, you will drive back to the hotel and take a rest. The remaining day, you can spend on your own. You can explore Kathmandu, the Thamel market, and many more.
