Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary, the first Everest climbers, took the conventional route from Jiri to EBC. The avenue is well-known, and it leads us across Nepal’s natural wonders. Jiri, the trek’s starting point, is also known as “Little Heaven” in Nepal. The long journey before reaching the standard path via Lukla improves acclimatization.
The Jiri Everest Base Camp Trek features stunning vistas and also the beauty of landscapes, Rhododendron and pine trees, magnolia and alpine woods, and more. Mt. Makalu, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Everest can all be visible along the way. Spending two days at Junbesi, the great stopover with attractive lodges and bazaar atmosphere, we resume our trek towards Nunthala and Bupsa. From Bupsa, we step at Lukla, which joins the most common route to EBC. We then trek to Phakding. We’ll walk a few hours the next day to Namche Bazar, also known as the Everest gateway. After that, we’ll visit Namche Bazar and hike to the Everest View Hotel for panoramic views of Mt. Everest and the surrounding mountains.
Before returning to Namche Bazar, we’ll stop by the Hillary School, Hillary Hospital, and Khumjung village. After two days at Namche Bazar, we trek to Phortse, then Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep. We trek from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp for a few hours and witness the beauty of the surrounding mountains.
The following day, we leave early, for Kalapathar to arrive at the viewpoint before sunrise and enjoy the spectacular sunrise view from Mt. Everest. After experiencing the glorious dawn for several hours, we retrace our steps back to Pheriche and then Namche. We will be rewarded with the beautiful scenery of the Sun Koshi River as we pass the Kathmandu Valley and ride along the Swiss-built highway to Jiri. The beautiful trail leads about 7-8 hours on mountain roads.
The day begins with a suspension bridge crossing the river, followed by numerous tea houses, where you can interact with the locals. We’ll find plenty of prayer flags and ornately painted walls as we drive via the Deorali Pass, representing our arrival in a Tibetan cultural hotspot. After crossing the pass, we descend to Bhandar.
Following breakfast, descend to Dokharpa, cross a hill to Likhu Khola, and finally arrive in Kinja for lunch. We’ll warm up with a steep climb to Lamjura, then a nearly vertical descent to Chimbu! After a few hours of walking, we will arrive in Seta’s land, where beautiful nature and friendly locals will greet us.
After leaving Sete village, we trek towards Junbesi. On our way to Lamjura La Pass, we’ll cross via the Rhododendron forest. Lamjura Pass is the highest point between Jiri and Namche Bazaar. After that, the trek begins to Junbesi, a Sherpa settlement.
Junbesi is a great stopover for a rest day because of its attractive lodges and bazaar atmosphere with some fascinating neighborhoods leading to Buddhist monasteries in the nearby hills. Numbur, the god of Solu, over the vast green valley to the north. The Tashi Thongmon Gompa, built in the sixteenth century but devastated by fire many times, is located in the heart of Junbesi.
The Junbesi school, surrounded by a yellow-topped Stupa in the village’s center, is one of the largest Hillary schools, with over 300 students enrolled in classes ranging from primary to secondary. The Junbesi Khola valley, on the other hand, leads to Thubten Choling monastery, a Tibetan monastery established by the renowned Trulsuk Rinpoche, who migrated to Nepal with a large group of nuns and monks in the 1990s from Tibet’s Rongbuk Gompa.
Several more immigrants arrived in Thubten Choling on their way to India to pursue the Dalai Lama Dharmashala. On a rest day, it’s also worth stopping by before or after lunch.
We return to the highway, cross the Junbesi Khola and leave the village through an elevated track to Khumbu. We get our first glimpse of Everest and the surrounding peaks from there. As we progress, the views of Everest grow bigger and closer. Before reaching Nunthala, descend through another thick forest teeming with life.
From Nunthala to Dudh Koshi, the trail descends through the long suspension bridge before ascending terraced fields and house yards. A cluster of buildings on the ridge Bupsa can be seen from Khari Khola. The trail leaves the village and climbs steeply to Bupsa, crossing the Khari Khola on a suspension bridge near some water-powered mills.
Before arriving in Surkhe, a small village just below Lukla, we’ll pass through a few small hamlets. After that, we’ll climb the Khari La Pass, passing through caves where porters rest on their way to Lukla. After a few hours of walking, we arrive in Lukla.
